Keyword Density

23 Sep

Keyword Density is the amount of a keyword appears throughout a single web page.

When creating content for search engine optimization it is good to keep keyword density in mind. Each page of your site should be focused on one subject which naturally your main keyword should be sprinkled throughout.

Don’t go overboard though and place repeating keywords in places they shouldn’t be. If you are creating usable content then you want your copy to be readable and enjoyable. If you stuff your pages with repetitive keywords you are bound to set off alarm bells with the search engines and annoy your visitors so stay away from this method.

So how do you know when your pages are dense enough? Well there isn’t any golden rule here. The best thing to do is stick to one topic per page and use the keyword more or less depending on the amount of words there are on the page. If you have a 500 word article on keyword density then you should use the that keyword in the title and heading of your page as well as 5 times through out the article. But again, if you are sacrificing readability for search engine optimization then don’t bother. Even if you do get traffic people won’t stick around long.

Here’s a free keyword density checker you can use.

Keyword Research

Keyword analysis is very important to gaining traffic from search engines. All search engine optimization begins with keyword analysis or research. After all search engines are built around text and more importantly keywords or phrases. When you search for say Top Movies online you will be served with results the search engines have calculated as their top matches. There are tons of factors the search engines use to calculate what sites should be listed first but it all comes down to keywords.

Focus on one main keyword

What your site is about will determine what keywords you want to optimize your site for. If you are selling ebooks then you will start researching keywords related to ebooks. Doing some keyword research for say the keyword ebook you will see that over a 100,000 searches are made using the keyword “ebook” every month. If you go down the list you see sub keywords such as “free ebook”, “download ebook” etc.

Now click this link ebook to view how many sites are in Google under that keyword. There are over 20 million sites competing for that top position on Google! Trying to get on the first page of Google for that keyword is next to impossible unless you want to spend a few years working day and night on an intensive SEO campaign. It is much easier to focus on less popular keywords then it is to focus on broad keyword terms. Now search for the term free ebook download. You will find there are a little over 7 million sites to compete with which is better then 20 million but still 7 million sites is a lot. The keyword phrase “free ebook download” gets around 10,000 searches a month. That’s pretty decent if you were at the #1 spot on Google. You can keep going down the line to less popular keywords which are easier to compete for.

Keep your site focused around one main keyword. You can break off of the main keyword and build pages that are related but don’t build pages that are totally unrelated. The search engines want to search up websites that are clear and focused. Sticking to one main keyword is the trick.

Keep Track of your Stats

In your control panel you will find several stat programs that will give you detailed information on how many visitors your site is getting and what keywords they used to find your site. This is very valuable information because it tells you if your SEO campaign is paying off or if you need to do some more tweaking. Sometimes people will find your site through keywords you didn’t plan for and this gives you an area inwhich to expand your site. If people are searching for “top free ebook downloads” and arriving at your free ebook download page you can create a new page named “top free ebook downloads” and put information on it for your top downloads.
